Spurred by the debacle with the neighbors and a need to actually make ice and freeze baby food, last weekend I cleaned out our two freezers – this was a monumental task. I cannot believe the items that were sitting in the bottom of our stand alone freezer…packages of frozen potatoes, terriyaki chicken breasts (ready to cook – how many times could I have used those!), 4-5 boxes of hot pockets, and pounds and pounds of chicken breast. Sounds great – except that the date on these items was sometime in 2004! Exactly how long does chicken last when frozen? Four years just seems a little too long to take my chances. Yuck! So we had to say good-bye to a great deal of food. It was very sad.
Perhaps the sorriest loss (at least according to DH) is the tub of cool-whip. DH calls it the great tragedy of 2008, but this is from a guy who says “everything is better with whipped cream.”
I take comfort from the thought that, even though we just wasted by non-use about $100 or more worth of food, at least I have room in my freezer now to buy more food to waste…er, I mean store. This time, we’ve made an inventory of the freezer and stuck it to the wall – that way, if I ever say we’ve got nothing for dinner, DH can go out and pull out a gazillion other things that didn’t make the cut. We’ll see how it works.
