Every year, we have a tradition to countdown the days to Halloween with activities and little treats. We’ve tried different countdown calendars over the years and finally settled on one that works perfectly for us.

The setup starts with a simple paper chain. I tape or glue date stickers on each chain (one for each child). The kids pull the chain with the day’s date, and place the sticker on their October calendar. Then they read inside each chain to find out what the day’s activity or treat will be.

The best part is the learning that takes place without the kids even realizing it. It has helped preschoolers learn to count to 31. It has taught my kindergarteners and first graders about calendars. Not to mention providing some reading practice to my beginning readers.

I print out our activities and put them in my planner so that I can reference them throughout the month. These are the activities we’re doing this year.

I use the circular Avery 6450 labels on the chains. They are 1″ labels and work perfectly on printed 8.5″x11″ calendars.
