This last month, I was in charge of our science co-op lesson on the physics of floating and flying. It’s really a fun topic to study because who doesn’t love floating boats in the water and figuring out how airplanes fly? I’ll tell you who – my daughter! She would much rather spend her time dancing, drawing, painting, or making up stories. And she is decidedly not willing to entertain any stories involving males, to the point that she will change sentences in our other studies to be girls instead of boys. You know, instead of “Mark had 3 pencils and gave 2 away to his friend Bill” she’ll say “Marcia had 3 pencils and gave 2 away to her friend Belle.” But I’m not complaining! If she wants to dislike boys for quite a few more years, that’s just fine with me.
But it does make it hard to teach her science and history since they are pretty male-dominated. I knew keeping her interested in topics that she considers “boys stuff” would be a bit of a challenge. So when I came upon some girl pirate clip art by Prettygrafik on etsy, I got the idea to put together girly notebooking pages to pretty things up for her.

So I made this little unit on floating and boats that we worked on for a couple weeks which I’m sharing for free. The girly graphics and hands-on experiments detailed in the file did the trick. There were no complaints about studying “boy” stuff. I’ll be posting the mini-unit study on flying in a couple weeks.

You can download a copy here.

And for those boys in the group, well there’s a boy version too.
