I am pretty braindead this week, hence the lack of my normal, witty, hilarious posts (ha ha). I unfortunately cannot think of anything to write about beyond sales taxes and poop (hardly entertainment). So, I asked DH to give me a topic and I would write about it – no matter what. His choice? “How can a husband help a wife become endeared to science fiction?”
For starters, let me assert that DH’s assumption that I do not like science fiction is incorrect. Let’s look at the facts:
“What is Science Fiction?” Well, according to the great Wikipedia, “Science Fiction is a broad genre of fiction that often involves speculations based on current or future science or technology”. As a general rule, it is based on ideas that are contrary to reality. Below are four disparate ways this can be accomplished, along with my experience in such areas:
- Futuristic: The only movies I saw as a kid in a theater are Star Trek movies (until I was a pre-teen and able to go without the parents), which are based in the future. In only one of these films (I believe the last one), did they ever come to current time via “time travel” and I actually remember the movie! (This also covers number 4 below, but I digress). In addition, I happened to love “Back to Future” back then (and it had nothing to do with me thinking Michael J Fox was, well, Foxy!).
- Aliens & outer space: In different parts of my life, I’ve been a Star Trek Next Generation fan (I even recorded the “Viewers Choice” marathon when the show was cancelled), a Star Trek Voyager fan, and a Star Wars fan (ok, I was 6 and it was more like a crush on Luke Skywalker, and my friend and I would pretend to be Princess Leah, dressed in her mother’s lingerie – but it still counts!), all of which have aliens and take place in outer space.
- Technology that contradicts the laws of nature: I am a huge Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. I’ve watched the whole series (almost bought it too when I found each season at Costco for $16.99 each – but I held myself back for our budget’s sake). How is this contradictory technology? Even pretending that super-human powers are actually possible, to be able to kick Vampire butt in 5 inch heels without spraining an ankle…Those, my friends, are some pretty awesome shoes! (And yes, shoes are a technology – just ask the cavemen about their bunions)…
- Discovery/application of a new scientific principle: “Meet the Robinsons” has all sorts of crazy new inventions – time travel, robotics, mind-control…and I found it to be a very entertaining film…
Thus, I respectfully request DH to further delineate what he meant by the question, as obviously, I am a Sci-Fi freak! (And bringing up that I hated 2001: A Space Odyssey doesn’t count! It is a boring movie).
This deserves a good response. I will do this later. And then travel back in time to post it earlier.
