Barely functional

April 12, 2008 By: Katiecomment

Last night our neighbors came by to play games. We do this occasionally since they have two about the same ages as ours and we live next door to each other so we can turn on baby monitors rather than hiring babysitters. When we get together, it is usually last minute (see – I’m not that anal with my scheduling!).

We got together at our house because we are having trouble keeping DD in bed since she moved from the crib and because DS has been waking up a lot lately. Even though I enjoyed playing games, I almost wish we hadn’t done it because I am so embarrassed. It is almost too shameful to write.

First, they were so nice to bring ice cream for us to share. Once we scooped up our bowls, we went to put the rest in the freezer and, uh, there’s no room. My freezer is packed with…I don’t even know any more. Probably stuff that should have been either eaten or thrown out months ago. But we did find some room in the ice tray because there is no ice. So problem solved.

Whenever we go to their house, they present a huge array of sodas, punch, etc. But what do we have? Tap water or milk. And what’s worse, when one of them asked for ICE water, well – you guessed it – no ice remember?

Then, we pulled out our dominoes and half the game was missing because DD got into them. So one of the neighbors actually had to go back to their house to get their dominoes (and a big cup of ice and a coke).

During all of this, DD kept coming out. So once the game began, she sat on my lap for a while until (at about 10) she looked tired enough to put back to bed. Then she screamed for 15 minutes. Then she “snuck” out and hid in the coat closet. And that’s where she stayed. All night. Two hours in the coat closet watching us play. Yep – I’m a great mom!

And DS started crying and, thanks to advice from the doctor, I was letting him cry it out. But he kept crying and crying and crying. I’m sure we are going to be reported for child abuse now. The worst part was that for some stupid rationality on my part (I don’t remember what that rationality was), I had the baby monitor on in the room with us. So not only is it baby screaming – it is baby screaming amplified. And I didn’t turn it off! Ever! I finally gave up and went and got him – so not only have I shown how insensitive and cruel a mother I am, I’m also a very weak one.

So, in a nutshell, we’ve got nothing to drink, nowhere to keep the icecream, no complete games, a toddler who doesn’t mind, an abused baby, and a seriously deranged mind. We are great hosts! But hey, at least the carpet looked good!
